Borno APC Chairman, Lawmakers Scale Fence For Refusing To Pay Hired Thugs

Maiduguri—Borno State chairman
of All Progressives Congress, APC,
Ali Bukar Dalori and some
members of the state House

of
Assembly, who were meeting at one
of the government’s lodge in
Maiduguri, were, Tuesday, forced
to scale the perimeter fences for
dear life, following a clash between
the police attached to the former
and hoodlums claiming to be
members of the vigilante group,
popularly called Civilian JTF.
A sign near a checkpoint of a
vigilante group reads Civilian J.T.F
or Civilian Joint Task Force in
Maiduguri,. Young men and women
have in recent weeks formed
vigilante groups, hunting down
Boko Haram Islamists who have
sneaked back into the city following
a military offensive on their camps
on the Nigerian border with Niger,
Chad and Cameroon with
remarkable success.
Although Vanguard gathered that
the incident did not involved any
registered member of the Civilian
JTF, the political thugs claimed to
be members of the group.
The clash, according to
investigation, erupted when police
attached to the APC Chairman
attempted to stop some youths, who
claimed that the APC Chairman
assigned them to carry out certain
assignment against PDP, part of
which was to remove all PDP
billboards, flags in Maiduguri.
The youths said after accomplishing
their mission, they ended up
disappointed as they were denied
payment.
‘They’re impatient’
Sources closed to the APC Chairman
said: “The hired thugs are
impatient. When they came
demanding to see the Chairman,
they were told that he is in a
meeting. But they were not ready to
wait.
“They told the police that they are
in a hurry and that it would take
nothing for the Chairman to come
out and settle them before he goes
back to continue with his meeting.
But you know, the instruction was
given the police and they need to
carry it out.”
A Civilian JTF, Mallam Labor
Yahaya, confirmed the clash, but
said members of his group were not
involved in the fracas.
He said: “The thugs, who also
carried Dane guns, started the
shooting. The police shot one of the
rampaging youths in the leg and
one of the thugs also shot the
policeman in his leg.”

PDP Makes U-Turn, Passes Confidence Vote On Jega

Reprieve continues to come the
way of the chairman of the
Independent National Electoral
Commission (INEC), Attahiru Jega

as the national chairman of the
Peoples Democratic Party (PDP),
Alhaji Adamu Mu’azu, has said that
the party has great confidence in
him as the INEC chairman.
This was a great departure from
the series of allegations made
against Jega by the Director of the
PDP Presidential Campaign
Organisation, Femi Fani Kayode
who Wednesday accused the INEC
chairman of holding secret
meetings in Dubai and other places
with the intention of rigging the
election in favour of the All
Progressives Congress (APC).
Addressing a press conference in
company of all members of the PDP
National Working Committee, PDP
Governors led by the Chairman of
the PDP Governors’ Forum,
Godswill Akpabio, the governors of
Benue, Kogi, Cross River and
Bayelsa state, the Deputy Senate
President, Ike Ekweremadu, Deputy
Speaker, Emeka Ihedioha, among
others, Adamu Muazu said that the
party has confidence in the ability
of the chairman of INEC to conduct
the general elections.
Muazu also defended the former
President, Olusegun Obasanjo,
stating that his endorsement of the
APC presidential candidate,
General Buhari is a rumour and
that the former president cannot
commit anti-party activities. He
restated that former President
Obasanjo remains a committed and
loyal member of the PDP.
According to Muazu, “President
Jonathan appointed Prof. Attahiru
Jega and therefore knows him very
well before the appointment.
The President has restated his
confidence in the INEC Chairman
and therefore we have confidence
in him to conduct a free and fair
general election.
We have confidence in him and I
don’t act on rumours and therefore
we will work with him as the
chairman of INEC.”
According to the PDP chairman,
“Although we tend to agree with
INEC on the security reasons given
for the postponement of the
elections, we are nevertheless not
unmindful of the fact that the
commission on its own part was
not fully prepared for the February
14 election date.
“Taking the INEC Chairman, Prof.
Attahiru Jega on his own words, for
the 68.8 million registered voters,
the commission had only printed
and delivered 66.3 million
Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) with
1.3 million yet to be delivered and
1.1 million stolen cards yet to be
replaced.
“Also, according to Jega, 45.09
million voters cards were collected
by prospective voters representing
65.8 percent of the registered
voters and 23.71 million PVCs,
representing 34.2 percent were yet
to be collected as at February 7th,
which is exactly one week to the
February 14th earlier scheduled
date. Compare this anomaly with
the 2011 elections where not a
single eligible voter was
disenfranchised.
“By this account, INEC could not
sincerely claim to have been fully
prepared for a desirable credible,
free and fair election at the time
when more than 23 million
registered voters were going to be
disenfranchised.”

I Will Arrest Governors If They Don’t Behave During Election – Mbu

The new Assistant Inspector-
General of Police, Zone 2, Joseph
Mbu, has warned that his men will
arrest
any governor with “unruly
attitude” during the forthcoming
elections.
Mbu said this on Thursday in
Abeokuta, Ogun State, during his
official visit to the Ogun State
police command headquarters
located in the Eleweran area of the
state.
The two governors he is expected to
work under are Ibikunle Amosun
and Babatunde Fashola.
Mbu also ordered the men of the
command, who would be on
electoral duty, to arrest promptly
anyone caught with arms near the
voting centres. He said, “I am here
to encourage, support and advice
you because we have a critical part
to play in the forthcoming
elections.
“Our actions and activities will go a
long way to decide on this election,
so, I have come to tell you that we
must remain impartial in ensuring
free, fair, peaceful and violent-free
polls.
“As far as the law is concerned, we
are not going to respect anybody
and whoever is coming to the booth
should vote and leave peacefully.
“Anyone who comes there to
campaign even if it is the chief
executive of the state, a constable
at that polling booth would stop
him.”

One Of Boko Haram’s Local Leaders Arrested

A suspected local leader of Boko
Haram was arrested and several
weapons including rocket launchers
seized from his home in the town

of Diffa in southern Niger Republic
yesterday, security sources said.
The town on the Nigerian border
has come under attack from the
militants this past week, since Chad
deployed hundreds of troops in the
area as part of a regional effort to
tackle Boko Haram.
The man was identified as Kaka
Bonou, a trader known to
authorities for suspected
involvement in trafficking stolen
goods, the security source said.
“Different type of weapons of all
calibre including rocket launchers,
were found in his house,” one of
the Niger military sources told
Reuters, requesting to remain

imprisonment in June 2014 on
allegations of helping banned
Muslim Brotherhood and spreading
false information about the
Egyptian government.

His Girlfriend Was Raped; Should He Continue With Her?

We’ve been friends since October, but
recently we started dating..
Day b4 Yesterday, in the morning,
she called and asked for directions

to a street in Uyo, she said she
wanted to visit a friend. She’s a
social type, so I didn’t bother
asking who she wanted to visit.
Like an hour latter, she called but I
missed the call, and when I tried
calling back, the phone was off..
Around 6.30 pm, I called and she
said she was still at the friend’s
place.. Her voice was down, but I
didn’t bother asking y.
Yesterday she used a guy’s pics on
her bbm d.p, and wrote ‘I hate u’
on it. I asked her y, though she
didn’t want to tell me, she latter
said the guy had raped her.
After she tried calling me, the guy
had snatched the phone from her,
and turned it off..
Somehow, ave forgiven her, but am
confused.. This is d second time,
someone has disflowered my
girlfriend.. Though not the same
girl..
I can’t forgive the guy but I don’t
know if to continue the
relationship

‘I Used Stolen Money To Sow Seed In RCCG, Winners’ – Fraudster Pastor

The State Criminal Investigation
Department of the Lagos State Police
Command has arrested a man known
as Pastor Chibuzor Nnaegbo for fraud.

Speaking after his arrest, Pastor
Chibuzor confessed that his victims
believed he was in Israel trying to
open a church so they donated
millions of Naira to his ministry.
He however said he gave out most
of the money he collected to other
churches, including Pastor EA
Adeboye’s Redeemed Christian
Church of God (RCCG) and Bishop
David Oyedepo’s Winners Chapel,
as ‘seed’.
“My problem started while I was
pastoring a church in Onitsha; I
read a book written by Bishop
Oyedepo on how to sow seed. After
reading the book I sold all the
church properties and sowed the
proceeds in another church.
“When I relocated to Lagos, I
started collecting money from
people, deceiving them that I am in
Israel. I told them that I had issues
trying to set up a church and
needed money to grow the
ministry.
“I used all the money I collected
from them to sow seed in
Redemption camp. I collected N1.9
million from one of the victims,
N1.255 million from another, N2.5
million from the third and
N900,000 and a Toyota Camry from
the fourth victim. I sowed the
Camry as seed in Winners Chapel
in Otta.
“I was arrested through my
younger brother who I sent to
collect money from one of the
victims, unknown to me that he had
discovered that he was being
defrauded and had reported to
Ilemba Divisional Police, and they
arrested me.
“Concerning the porn videos that
were found in my phone, I watch
the pornography videos on my
phone whenever I have sexual urge
because I don’t have sexual
intercourse with women,” he said.

I Am Not A Religious Fanatic – Buhari Tells Pastors

The All Progressives Congress (APC)
Presidential Candidate, Gen.
Muhammadu Buhari , has said that he
is not a religious fanatic.

Buhari stated this in Abuja on
Thursday in a meeting with no
fewer 200 pastors from the 19
northern states under the aegis of
Northern Christian Leaders Eagle-Eye
Forum .
Giving a background of his
stewardship as a military Head of
State, he said that all that mattered
to him then were competence,
integrity and fairness to all.
“I would like to solemnly declare
that in spite of what our detractors
say, I am not a religious fanatic of
any sort and I have never been.
In all my life, I have never supported
extremism of any kind, and nowhere
in my record of service to this
nation can this false toga, political
opponents have tried so hard to put
on me, be substantiated.
Indeed, it is very unfortunate and I
feel extremely sad that I have to
give this type of assurance,” he said.
Buhari restated that the issue of
religion was, and should always be
a matter of personal conviction.
“This personal conviction approach
to religion has defined my work and
interactions all my life, including my
tenure in office as military Head of
State.
The religion of all those I worked
with was never a factor in their
progress or in what happened to
them.
“All that mattered then, and should
still matter today, are competence,
integrity and readiness to be fair to
all,’’ he stressed.
He said that he had a balanced
cabinet with key positions,
including Finance, Energy and
Defence, occupied by Christians, in
addition to 11 of the 19 governors
he appointed.
“My most memorable recollections
of subordinate service was under
Christian bosses, the finest our
country had then, and among the
most respected today.
Indeed, one of the best appraisals I
received in the course of my military
career was from Gen. T.Y. Danjuma.
Let me state this categorically that
I, Muhammadu Buhari, as an
individual, and as president of this
great country by the grace of God, if
given the opportunity to serve, have
no personal religious agenda.
And, I will not entertain, consider or
promote the religious agenda of
anyone. I will not condone any
initiative that seeks to promote one
religion over the other.
Neither I, nor my party, or any
member of my team has any desire
or plan to Islamise or Christianise
Nigeria or support anyone with
such intention.
Sharia cannot therefore be the law
of Nigeria,’’ Buhari assured.
He said that as a religious nation,
the burning of places of worship
“constitutes one of the vilest forms
of abomination to all those who
believe in God.’’
Also speaking, Buhari’s running
mate, Yemi Osinbajo, pledged to re-
enforce feeding in all primary
schools in the country.
`”In our land today, we have
reports that 110 million people are
extremely poor, and poverty knows
no tribe or religion.
Corruption has made us lose so
much money. In Osun, it costs N2.6
billion to feed children of school
age,’’ he said.
The Chairman of the Forum, Habu
Aminchi, urged Christians to come
out en-masse and vote for
candidates of their choice.
Aminchi charged all Nigerians to
continue to pray that God would
restore the country’s glory in all
fields of human endeavour.
“I can tell you with that everything
will be okay; the economy will
bounce back, businesses will boom
and even offerings will increase,’’ he
said.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN )
reports that highlights of the event
were the singing of a hymn by all
and the presentation of a Bible to
Buhari and Osinbajo.
NAN also recalls that Buhari, in
furtherance of his campaign for the
presidency, met with the
Conference of Catholic Bishops of
Nigeria on Wednesday to allay
their fears on religious freedom

It’s An Insult To Question Buhari’s Credentials – Obasanjo

Former president, Chief Olusegun
Obasanjo, yesterday said it is
insulting and ridiculous to question
the academic credentials of APC
presidential candidate, retired Gen.
Muhammad Buhari.

Speaking at the launch of his book,
My Watch, in London, Obasanjo
said when he joined the army, it
was mandatory that one must have
WASC or GCE before enlisting in
the armed forces.
He said the requirements were the
same when Gen. Buhari joined the
army in 1961, adding that even if
Buhari did not have the required
qualifications then, he had gone
through the staff college which is
equivalent to a first degree and the
U.S. War College which is
equivalent to a master’s degree.
“If anybody thinks that I’m
illiterate or uneducated after
attending many military
institutions in the UK, India and
the US, they should read my books”,
he said, and urged those engaged
in Buhari’s qualification debacle to
“focus on real issues and stop
degenerating into trivialities”.
Obasanjo, who answered questions
from the audience on various socio-
political issues affecting Nigeria,
said he would assess the candidates
in the election and “vote for one
with the best record”.
The former president remarked
that God would not have forgiven
him if he had allowed vice-
president Atiku Abubakar to
succeed him, noting that with his
experience, he knew what the job
of running Nigeria entailed and
who could do it well.
On whether he was overheating the
Nigerian polity with his comments,
Obasanjo said: “I am not heating
anything. When things are going
bad and you can’t say anything,
you are an accomplice. If anybody
can prove that what I am saying is
wrong, I will apologise”.
On the Chibok girls, Obasanjo
berated the federal government for
taking long to acknowledge the
incident, but not doing enough to
bring back the girls, stressing that
though the girls may never come
together again, “we must not forget
them”.
He said in spite of the problems
bedeviling Nigeria, the country’s
future is “rosy” and bright,
emphasizing that the country faced
similar problems in the past,
including the civil war but came
out stronger.
“God will see Nigeria through.
Nigeria will emerge successfully
and move up and forward”, he
said.
The book launch which was
attended by mainly Nigerians in
Diaspora, was anchored by Richard
Dowden of the Royal African
Society, London, and Zeinab
Badawi, a renowned television
broadcaster.

Jonathan Explains What Meant When He Said “Stealing Is Not Corruption”

President Goodluck Jonathan,
yesterday clarified what he meant
by stealing is not corruption,
saying he was quoted out of
context.

Responding to questions during a
presidential media chat on
Wednesday, the President
explained that the remark flowed
from a discussion he had with a
former chief justice of the
federation, who told him of how he
had to distinguish straight acts of
stealing from other forms of
corruption he acted upon.
“People who told you I said
stealing is not corruption did not
tell you I said stealing is good.
That is why philosophers say that
the primary reason people
disagree is because people use one
statement to explain two typical
things or vice versa.
“I made that statement because I
quoted the former Chief Justice of
Nigeria, Mustapha, (when) I called
a meeting then, with the anti-
crime organisations and the
judiciary.
“The CJN, Mustapha decided to
take a look at the files that dealt
with corruption and more than 80
per cent of them were just cases of
stealing. But people use
corruption to cover all. What I am
saying is that let us go to the
South-West and go to a typical
community and they look at you
and say this man is corrupt,
people will be looking at you. But
call that same man “ole”, that is
thief, and see what will happen to
him. Our people hate thieves more
than corrupt people, yet most
times, we use corruption to cover
the lapses.
“A thief should be called a thief
and treated as such. In my village,
when an adult steals, they strip
him unclad, humiliate him and his
family, but if you say this man is
corrupt, they won’t know what
you are talking about. We are
using corruption to cover it all up.
“So, let us communicate properly.
It was not me that said it, I
quoted Mustapha. He examined
the corruption cases and he saw
that they were just cases of
stealing.
“We are identifying thieves; we
can talk about what the agencies
are doing. We have made more
convictions in this period than
before. But I always say that the
answer is not convicting more
people. We must make sure that
they don’t steal. Do not put the
money where they can steal it.
That is what we are doing.”

Bayelsa PDP Suspends Chairman Over Diezani’s N40m Gift

The Peoples Democratic Party in
Bayelsa State has suspended its
Chairman, Col. Sam Inokoba (retd.),
over alleged financial impropriety.

Inokoba was suspended by the
members of the State Working
Committee on Wednesday for
alleged misconduct and diversion
of N40m gift provided for the party
by the Minister of Petroleum
Resources, Mrs. Diezani Allison-
Madueke.
It was learnt that the decision to
suspend Inokoba was taken on
Tuesday after deliberation by
members of the State Executive
Council.
Publicity Secretary of the PDP in
the state, Mr. Osom Makebre, who
confirmed the suspension, declined
to give further details.
He however explained that the
decision of the SEC had been
forwarded to the national
leadership of the party for
ratification.
Makbere said in accordance with
the party’s constitution, it was
expected that the Deputy Chairman
of the party, King Serena Dokubo-
Spiff, would take over the running
of the party within the next 30
days.
A source at the meeting said the
suspended chairman had been
invited to appear before the
enlarged SEC but that he refused
and reportedly travelled to Abuja.
According to the source, SEC
members deliberated on a five-
count charge of misconduct levelled
against Inokoba.
Inokoba was also accused of
refusing to join in the ongoing
campaigns for candidates of the
Bayelsa Central Senatorial district
because the candidates were not his
choice.
The party source, who craved
anonymity, said, “He has since
neglected to carry out his official
duties as party chairman. He
sponsored aspirants during the
party primaries instead of engaging
in neutrality as the chairman of the
party.
“He also publicly, in the presence of
party members, ordered his
security aides and thugs to beat a
party member due to dispute over
party primaries materials.
“He also engaged in promoting
factions within the state PDP and
engaged in financial dishonesty
with funds provided by members of
the PDP from the state and national
level.”
But reacting to the suspension,
media aide to the suspended
chairman, Mr. Nelson Agadi,
described the suspension as illegal
and “a sponsored action.”
“The suspension is a lie that cannot
hold and it is a violation of the
Section 10 sub section 7 of the
party constitution,” Agadi said

Young Man Allegedly Murdered By Police In Calabar

The family of a young man named
Stanley Etim who worked at a
popular supermarket called Sparks
in Calabar is accusing the police in
the state of killing him.
According to a family source,
Stanley had had an issue with a girl
who was allegedly connected with a
police man.
Three officers of the Calabar police
force showed up in a private
vehicle last week Thursday to arrest
him at the supermarket and took
him away.
They said they were arresting and
charging him with armed robbery.
The following day, Stanley’s family
members were at the police station
to bail him and challenge the police
but were told nobody was arrested
by that name or any case booked at
the station the previous day.
But some other detainees shouted
that Stanley been shot and taken to
the police clinic in Calabar.
The family said until now, neither
the corpse nor Stanley has been
seen by the family.
His family have now petitioned the
Commissioner of police and
Attorney General of the federation..

Nigerian Engineers To Repair Refineries For N99bn – NNPC

The Nigerian National Petroleum
Corporation on Wednesday said it had
engaged the services of in-house
engineers to rehabilitate the country’s
three ailing refineries at a cost of
$550m (N99bn)
, down from the $1.6bn
(N288bn) presented to it by foreign
contractors.
The refineries are the Port
Harcourt Refining Company,
Kaduna Refining and
Petrochemical Company Limited
and the Warri Refining and
Petrochemical Company Limited.
The Group Executive Director,
Refining and Petrochemicals,
NNPC, Mr. Ian Udoh, stated that the
corporation resolved to use
indigenous engineers because it
could not pay the bills of foreign
contractors who were nominated
by the original builders of the
refineries.
Udoh spoke during a press briefing
organised by the corporation to
refute claims that it was indicted by
the report of the forensic audit
carried out on its operations by
PriceWaterhouseCoopers.
He said, “For the three refineries,
the estimates going with the
nominees of the original builders
of the refineries would have come
up to $1.6bn. But we can’t afford
that because we are not going to get
any funding from the government
for that.
“We examined the work scope and
picked up the essential things that
we must do to get these refineries
to operate optimally at around 90
per cent of capacity. That was done
and we did the pricing template;
not the international rates, we used
the local rates. And everything for
the three refineries combined came
to around $550m, which is
significant, maybe up to 70 per
cent reduction.
“Even the $550m is quite much. So,
we amortised it over 18 months so
that we will be able to swallow it in
bits more easily. The 18 months
started since last October and this
means that early next year, the
refineries should be in shape.”
He stated that the original builders
of the refineries were not willing to
come to Nigeria but nominated
their partners to handle the
turnaround maintenance of the
facilities.
The partners, according to Udoh,
are not willing to give post
rehabilitation performance
guarantee, adding that their prices
were exceedingly high.
He said, “So, a new pact had to be
taken, which is more affordable for
the NNPC, that is, to rehabilitate all
the refineries simultaneously,
resorting more to what is locally
available. And these include the in-
house engineers and such
contractors that have been working
with us all these years who are
familiar with the plant.
“Part of that plan is that if there is
any challenging big equipment, we
resort to the original
manufacturers to send a
representative to join our engineers
on the ground to carry out
whatever is needed to be done.”
Earlier in his address, the Group
Managing Director, NNPC, Dr.
Joseph Dawha, had explained that
the $1.48bn, which PwC directed it
to remit to the Federation Account,
was the balance of the book value
of the divested assets that were
transferred to the Nigerian
Petroleum Development Company,
excluding taxes and royalties.
“This value is still being reconciled
with the Department of Petroleum
Resources,” he added.
He stated that what the DPR sent to
the corporation as the estimated
value of the assets was $1.847bn,
out of which the NNPC paid over
$300m as a token to indicate its
commitment to acquiring the assets
pending resolution and
reconciliation by both
organisations.
On why the NNPC had not been
able to tackle pipeline vandalism
despite installing electronic
monitoring gadgets on them, the
corporation’s Group Executive
Director, Engineering and
Technical, Mr. Adebayo Ibirogba,
stated that the technology might
detect immediately where a
pipeline had been blown up, but
the ability to respond speedily was
an issue.

Femi Fani-Kayode Accuses INEC Of Colluding With APC To Rig 2015 Elections

The PDP Presidential Campaign
Organisation, has accused the
Independent National Electoral
Commission (INEC)
, of poor
handling of distribution of the
Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) to
eligible voters.
Femi Fani-Kayode, Director of Media
and Publicity of the organisation,
made the accusation at a news
conference in Abuja on
Wednesday.
He alleged that the INEC Chairman,
Attahiru Jega , may be working in
collaboration with some members
of the opposition to favour the All
Progressives Congress (APC).
“The matter is that INEC has failed
in its responsibility to produce and
distribute PVCs to about 34% of
registered voters who would require
the cards to vote in the elections.
This brings us to the issue of
statistics of PVC distribution and
collection, which we believe Prof.
Jega, as a person, acting in concert
with some forces of retrogression, is
playing games with.
We express our concerns today that
Jega may have decided to aid the
APC to rig the forthcoming elections
through the manipulation of the
production, distribution and
collection of PVCs,” he said.
According to Fani-Kayode,
emerging trends had shown
calculated attempts to deprive parts
of the country that would vote for
President Goodluck Jonathan , of
their PVCs.
He said that parts of the country
that would vote for the APC
presidential candidate, Gen.
Muhammadu Buhari , already have
their PVCs.
Fanyi-Kayode described as
unjustifiable, attacks on the PDP,
on the postponement of the
scheduled Feb. 14 and 28 general
elections to March 28 and April 11
by the INEC.
According to him, the INEC
chairman hinged the postponement
on the security advice given by the
National Security Adviser with
respect to the Boko Haram
insurgency in the North-East.
He said Jega deliberately failed to
tell Nigerians the whole truth that
underpinned the postponement.
This, he added, provided the
opposition APC a platform to
accuse the PDP of complicity in the
decision to postpone the elections.
He stressed that the decision to
postpone the elections was INEC’s,
since it was constitutionally saddled
with that responsibility.
“The commission has done just that
and it had hinted that it was having
challenges with the distribution and
collection of the PVCs.
He stressed that the PDP had
realised “ how Jega dishonestly
presented the reasons for the
postponement of the elections.’’
According to Fani-Kayode, the
major reason that informed INEC’s
decision “was the deliberate
attempt by the commission to
disenfranchise over 23 million
eligible voters who are yet to collect
their PVCs.’’
He alleged that the collection rates
of PVCs in the North Central, South-
South, South West and South East
regions assumed to be pro-
Jonathan, were much lower with
the highest being 57%.
He noted that the North West zone
which includes Katsina, the home
state of Buhari, APC presidential
candidate, had the highest
collection rate of 80 per cent.
He also claimed that the North-East
had a 75% collection rate when the
three states in this zone, Adamawa,
Borno and Yobe, had been under
the attack of Boko Haram
insurgents.
This insurgency, Fani-Kayode
noted, had led to the displacement
of many residents in the zone.
“Pieces of information at our
disposal have shown that Jega has
had meetings with APC stalwarts in
Dubai and other cities in the world
to perfect this wanton conspiracy
against 23 million eligible voters.
Besides, we have information that
the PVCs that Nigerians are
scrambling for are not in Nigeria
and will not arrive before the
elections.
These PVCs are still in China and
Prof. Jega has strategically delayed
their arrival to suit his
electioneering permutations’’, he
said.
He challenged Jega to show
Nigerians proof that the Chinese
company printing the PVCs had
been paid in full by disclosing the
total contract sum and the amount
paid till date.
He also charged him to show proof
of arrival or expected date of
arrival of all PVCs for the elections
and tell Nigerians how he could
have distributed 23 million PVCs
within five days to elections, if not
postponed.
“We hereby challenge Jega to be
honourable and transparent to
publish accurate information on the
state of PVCs and how he plans to
distribute them before elections.
He should respond to allegations of
partisanship and ineptitude, and live
up to his responsibilities as an
independent election umpire. If he
refuses to do so, we may end up
losing confidence in him’’, Fani-
Kayode said

Woman Sends Robber To Attack Her Ex For Dumping Her After Abortions [See Photo]

The police in Lagos have arrested a
32-year-old woman, Janet Effiong, for
allegedly conniving with a suspected
robber to attack a cab driver, who
was allegedly her ex-lover and who
had cheated on her.

PUNCH Metro learnt that Effiong
was arrested along with a robbery
suspect, Femi Talabi, who helped
her to carry out the operation.
They were arrested on Airport
Road, near Ajao Estate, in the Isolo
area of Lagos on Saturday,
February 7, at about 7.30pm by
policemen attached to the Rapid
Response Squad.
They were thereafter transferred to
the state Special Anti-Robbery
Squad, Ikeja.
Our correspondent learnt that
Effiong, who owned a restaurant in
the VGC area of Lekki, had hired
Talabi, who was one of her patrons,
for N20,000 to attack her ex-lover,
identified simply as Murphy.
Talabi had allegedly agreed to get
two more men, and had collected
N10, 000 as advance payment from
Effiong.
It was learnt that on the day of the
incident, Talabi reportedly
contacted Murphy, who worked as
a cab driver, to take him to Ajao
Estate, with the intention of
carrying out the attack on the road.
It was, however, gathered when
Talabi brought out a toy gun to
threaten his victim, the RRS
policemen swooped on the two men
and got Talabi arrested.
Effiong, who hailed from Uruan,
Akwa Ibom State, said she hired
Talabi to deal with her ex-lover
because Murphy forced her to abort
her pregnancy on two occasions
and later abandoned her for other
women.
She said, “I contacted Femi (Talabi)
to help me deal with my former
lover. Murphy and I had been
dating since 2012. I lavished money
on him, thinking he would marry
me. He even borrowed N200, 000
from me and failed to pay back.
“He also impregnated me on two
occasions and he forced me to
abort them. I insisted I would not
abort the third one, and he
promised to take care of the baby.
But it was a lie.
“So, I hired Femi to trace him and
beat him up. Femi said he would
get two other friends to do the job.
I did not know he would go alone. I
promised to pay Femi N20,000.
“I did not plan to kill my lover. I
only wanted to punish him for
neglecting me for other women.”
Also, 35-year-old Talabi who hails
from Epe, Lagos, said the cab
driver became suspicious as he
wanted to attack him and a
physical fight started during which
attracted the policemen that
arrested him and his victim.
He said, “I live in the Bariga area,
but work as an Air conditioner
technician in Lekki. I am not a
cultist. It was Janet (Effiong) who
contacted me to do a job for her. I
knew her as a restaurant manager.
She said the man was her ex-lover
and had abandoned her.
“I called him to take me in his cab
to a destination on Airport Road,
Isolo, where the attack would take
place. I was to pay him N7,000 for
the trip. Janeth told me to only
assault, and not to kill him. While
in the cab, I lied that I wanted to
ease myself and he stopped. When
he did, I brought out a toy gun and
wanted to hit him on the head, but
a fight started and we as were
struggling with each other, the
police found out, and they arrested
both of us.”
The Lagos State Police Public
Relations Officer, DSP Kenneth
Nwosu, confirmed the arrest,
adding that the police had
concluded investigations on the
matter.
“The two suspects have also been
charged to court,” he added.

APC Will Slash Tariffs On Imported Cars – Osinbajo

Vice Presidential candidate of the
All Progressives Congress, Prof.
Yemi Osinbajo, has assured that the
General Muhammadu Buhari

government will slash tariffs on
imported vehicles.
He also said that the APC
government would tackle the power
problem by decentralising power
generation across the country.
While addressing a town hall
meeting of political stakeholders in
Ondo State on Tuesday, Osinbajo
said Buhari will not Islamise
Nigeria contrary to the campaign
smear of the Peoples Democratic
Party.
He said, “We do not agree that
there should be high tariffs on
imported cars whether new or old
ones because Nigeria is not
producing cars for now.
“What we will do first is to fix
power and encourage local
production of cars. But before then
we will reduce the high tariffs that
Nigerians are paying to import
vehicles into the country.”
Prof. Osinbajo argued that
Nigerians should not find it
difficult to purchase cars for their
soci0-economic activities, and the
APC government would ensure
lower tariffs when voted into
power.
On power, the vice presidential
candidate said the problem in
Nigeria was traceable to the lack of
supply of gas to the power plants.
He promised that module power
plants would be situated in
neighborhoods where power is
needed and gas supplied to it using
trucks and other means besides
pipelines.
According to him, the model has
already been put to use in Lagos
State where such plants supply
power to designated
neighborhoods.
Osinbajo also denied that the APC
government would ban commercial
motor cycles across the country,
saying okada would be allowed
provided riders obey laws and keep
to the rules in the states where they
operate.
He lamented the unemployment
situation in the country, saying that
as an emergency measure, the APC
government would cooperate with
states in creating 20,000 jobs
annually in the country.
He said corruption would be
stopped so that resources would be
available for development projects.
He said under APC government, it
would be criminal not to pay
pensions, saying the law that would
be put in place would compel
employers to ensure pensioners got
their entitlements as soon as they
retire.
Osinbajo added that the job
creation strategy would involve
making loans available to small
businesses with little or no interest.

Paul Play Dairo Sues Etisalat For Copyright Infringement

Nigerian music icon and multiple
award-winning artiste, Paul Play
Dairo, has dragged a
telecommunications service

provider, Etisalat, before a Federal
High Court in Lagos for allegedly
infringing on his copyright.
The ‘Angel of My Life’ crooner
asked Justice C.J. Aneke to compel
Etisalat to pay him N200m for
making use of his 2009 hit-track,
“Mosorire” without having
obtained his authorisation. His
grouse with the defendants
stemmed from the alleged use of
the track “Mosorire” in the
defendant’s popular television
reality show, tagged, “Nigerian
Idol” for two consecutive years
without paying him.
Joined with Etisalat in the suit
marked FHC/CS/581/2014 is one
Optima Media Group. Paul Play, in
the affidavit filed in support of his
suit and deposed to by himself,
averred that, “I am the copyright
owner of the work named and
tagged “Mosorire”, contained in my
repertoire, exclusively for the
jurisdiction of Nigeria and the
authority or permission to exploit
such work can only be obtained
from me.
“However, the defendants being an
organiser of a television reality
show tagged, “Nigerian Idol” caused
the use, adaptation and deployment
of my said work titled, “Mosorire”
on the said show without my
consent, and which was broadcast
to several millions of television
viewers throughout the Federal
Republic of Nigeria and the rest of
Africa for 2012 and 2013 editions.”
The artiste said the defendants
particularly infringed on his
copyright when they allowed one of
the contestants on the show to
reproduce and perform his song in
the glare of the whole nation and
beyond. Paul Play averred that as a
singer and composer, he was
entitled to an annual fee of N100m
on the said track, as commensurate
with his effort in putting the work
together. He however averred that
having made use of his work
without obtaining permission from
him, the defendants had caused
him loss of income while “they have
made gains and improved on their
own brand image.”
The artiste therefore sought a
declaration of the court “that the
act of adaptation, deployment,
public performance and
exploitation of his musical work
titled “Mosorire” by the defendants
without the plaintiff’s prior
consent, authorisation or
permission constitutes an
infringement of the plaintiff’s
copyright, as guaranteed by the
Copyright Act, Cap C28, Laws of the
Federal Republic of Nigeria, 2004
and sections 6 (6) (b) and 44 of the
1999 Constitution.”

Prof. Osinbajo Blast Jonathan After Presidential Media Chat

Corruption is defined as “dishonest
or fraudulent conduct by those in
power, typically involving bribery”.
The definition is simple and we all
know what it is, yet Mr. President
has spent the last several minutes
of his media chat explaining to
Nigerians what it is, suggesting we
are all somehow confused about
this.

Full Text Of President Jonathan 8th Presidential Media Chat

The challenges confronting Nigeria
– insecurity, the economy,
corruption, dearth of infrastructure
– were largely discussed. Here’s all
he said, compiled by me with
additional information from
PremiumTimes.

On postponed elections:
The president sought the
understanding of the international
community over the postponed
elections. He said the kind of
scenarios where elections are
postponed for the sake of
perpetuating power is not the case
in Nigeria.
Boko Haram:
The president was asked why he
thinks the war against Boko Haram
can be won in six weeks even
though the war had raged for six
years. The president said he has
just acquired new weapons, and
gotten support of neigbhouring
countries to fight Boko Haram. He
mentioned that Chad waited for
African Union approval, which they
recently got too. He also mentioned
that the issue of security is beyond
Boko Haram. The president said it
runs into dangerous signals of
youth restiveness. In the next four
weeks Nigerians will see the
difference in the security
intervention in the North, he said.
The president is asked where he
bought arms for the coming onslaught
on Boko Haram. He said they managed
to get from other sources other than
America.
Do you have confidence in Jega to
conduct the 2015 elections?
The president said he wished Jega was
seated by his side to answer the
question.
I wish Jega were here, I could have
asked him to answer whether I
have confidence in him Yes those
who called for his sack may be
close to me, but they express their
own opinion. More than 80 per
cent of those who sponsor messages
on our behalf we don’t even know
them. People use the reschedule of
election to misinform Nigerians.
I have never thought about
removing INEC Chairman, though I
have the constitutional power to do
so.”
GEJ blamed his supporters for
rumours about Jega’s resignation.
“I have not told anybody that I will
remove Jega,” he said. He
explained that if there are obvious
reasons to remove Jega, he would
rely on “constitutional” provisions
that gives him powers to sack
whoever he appoints.
Attacks:
”The level of misinformation,
especially from young people is
high. Attempting to attack the
president is treasonable
offence.The president is protected
by soldiers, not just the police.
People get carried away and make
some provocative statements.
Those who pelted my convoy
during my campaigns in the
Northern part of the country were
ignorant. If INEC conducts the
election poorly, it will be on my
head.”
Hate speeches and political violence
by both opposition and ruling party
members.
The president explained that “some
people” get carried away by the
political play and exude these
violence. He blamed aides and
associates of key political actors for
the hate speeches and political
violence. He did not categorically
condemn the hate speeches or war
threats or politically-motivated
violence.
“We will make sure things are done
so that nobody goes to war,” the
president said when he pressed for
categorical stance on the war
threats by ex-militants should he
lose the elections. He argues
journalists have responsibility to
ensure the unity of the country.
On why he frequents churches for
campaign but never visited mosques:
GEJ responded by saying he does
not receive invitations from
Muslims like from the churches.
If election would hold should the
military fails to eliminate Boko Haram
in six weeks:
The presidents said the new dates
are sacrosanct and a new president
would be sworn in by May 29. He
argued that the goal is not to totally
eliminate Boko Haram but to make
adequate security arrangement for
the election.
Missing Chibok girls:
Questioning moves to the issue of
the president’s perceived weak
support especially as it relates to
the missing Chibok girls. “Just give
us some times,” he said, responding
to questions seeking the state of the
girls at the moment. The president
is optimistic the girls would be
rescued with the new military
collaboration with neighbouring
countries. “I believe the story
would be different in a few weeks,”
the president said. “We would
recover them alive.”
I believe the story of Chibok Girls
will get better in the next few
weeks, but don’t quote me. We are
working with our neighbours, we
will comb the whole of that place
Partying after abduction? It’s
unfortunate that people play
politics with the issue of Chibok
girls. It’s not like that elsewhere. In
other countries, political
boundaries collapse in the face of
terror attacks, not so in Nigeria.
With regards to his weakened
political base, the president said
“in politics, there are only
permanent interests.”
The president is asked to clarify his
previous comments that “stealing is
not corruption”:
He said he made that statement
quoting the former Chief Justice of
Nigeria, Dahiru Mustafa, who
explained to him that his analysis
of corruption cases in Nigeria
showed that most of such cases
were theft. He argued that referring
to stealing as corruption minimizes
the crime. “Ole (thief in Yoruba)
should be called Ole and given that
treatment,” the president said.
“Let us communicate properly. The
word corruption, we have abused
it.”
“It is not actually my quotation. I
quoted the former Chief Justice,” as
he continues to defend his previous
comments on corruption and
stealing.
We have convicted more corrupt
people than ever. It is just that
Nigerians are confused on what the
difference is between stealing and
corruption.
The state of the N1 billion security
loan and funds confiscated in South
Africa.
He said the government have not
started disbursing the N1 billion
loan. With regards to the .3 million
arms money seized in South Africa,
he said the money does not belong
to Nigeria, technically. He added
that the matter was in court.
The president is asked if he would
hand over if he loses the next
election.
“If the elections are conducted and
I lose, of course, another president
would be sworn in,” the president
said. He argued that Nigeria is
more important than any
individual.
The president is asked what he will do
differently if he wins.
He said most of the problem he had
in the past is related to perception
and not concrete. He did not really
say what he would do differently.
The president is asked to comment on
his opponent for the 2015 general
election, Buhari.
The president responded it was an
unfair question. He however
mentioned that he has recieved
more criticism that Muhammadu
Buhari on social media.
The president is asked if he has
confidence in INEC as presidently
constituted.
He answered saying he appointed
everyone at the management level
of INEC.
Closing Remarks:
In his closing remarks, president
Jonathan assured Nigerians that
elections would be conducted and a
new president sworn in on May 29.
He argued that it is better for INEC
to conduct an election everyone
would be happy with.
Chat ended 20:19, 11th February, 2015.

I Will Happily Go Home If I Lose 2015 Elections – Pres. Jonathan

President Goodluck Jonathan is
dismissing insinuations being made
that he will not accept defeat if he
loses the 2015 presidential
elections.

He addressed the issue during a
media chat held in Abuja on
Wednesday, News Agency of Nigeria
(NAN) reports.
“In 2011, I said that I will conduct
a free and fair elections and if I
lose I will happily go home and it
should be recorded. As of that time
no African sitting president had
lost an election, but within this
period a number of African sitting
Presidents had lost elections.
But, I said that I wanted to create
history to be the first African
President that will lose election.
But, let the world know that the
election was a free and fair.Then, I
just concluded the late President’s
tenure; I was just a President for
about a year, acting for some
months then.
But, I said that I will be happy to
go home. That this nation is more
important than any human being
and I still maintain.Anybody who
wants to hold this office of the
president or any office at all and
feels that he is more important
than the nation, then, he it is not
quite right.
So, if as of that time I said that I
was ready to conduct a free and
fair election and if I lose I will go
not to talk about now that
Nigerians had given me the
opportunity to be here for four full
years.
So if the elections are conducted
and I lose, of course, I will
inaugurate a new government.
There is no way I will say if I lose
I will not hand over,” he said
The President said a lot of
misinformation was being
circulated by the media about the
2015 elections and urged Nigerians
to shun such propaganda for the
progress of the country.
He reassured Nigerians and the
international community that the
2015 general elections would be
conducted as planned by the
Independent National Electoral
Commission.
On the ongoing fight against Boko
Haram, the President disclosed that
the joint multi-national force,
including the Nigerian military had
intensified efforts to liberate all
areas captured by the insurgents.
He said the Nigerian Army had
taken delivery of new military
hardware that would help it in its
crusade against the insurgents.
He also expressed the hope that
with the renewed fight against the
militants, the Chibok girls might
soon be rescued.

Do Not Die For A Mediocre Performer – Obasanjo To Nigerians

At the launch of his book, My
Watch, in London today, former
President Olusegun Obasanjo urged
Nigerians not to die for a mediocre

performer, and said he maintains
the statement credited to him of his
endorsement of APC presidential
candidate, Gen Buhari.
“ What I said and I maintain that
and I will say it again and I will do
it. When the time comes for me to
vote, I will consider the track
record of all the candidates that
are contesting and I will assess
and based on my assessment for
who I believe have the best track
record to perform the job of the
Nigerian president, then he will
have my vote and if anybody
should know what the job of the
Nigerian president requires, I
should know.
“And there is no sentiment in the
affairs of Nigeria.Nigeria is a
population of 180million and you
wouldn’t have anybody other than
one person or two persons that
can run the affairs of Nigeria?
What the hell are we talking
about? For me there are millions
who can run the affairs of Nigeria
that are not even coming out.
So why should you die on behalf of
one who is probably performing as
a mediocre.
With all due respect. Nigeria, if
you love it, you would look for the
best for Nigeria and I don’t believe
that at this point in time we have
the best” he said

PDP Accuses Jega Of Meeting APC Leaders In Dubai

The Peoples Democratic Party on
Wednesday raised fresh allegations
aiming at discrediting the National
Chairman of the Independent National
Electoral Commission

, Prof. Attahiru
Jega, over the conduct of the elections.
At a crowded press conference in
Abuja, the Director of Media and
Publicity of the PDP Presidential
Campaign Organisation, Chief Femi
Fani-Kayode, alleged that Jega had
meetings with some unnamed
leaders of the main opposition
party, the All Progressives Congress,
in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
But the commission said it was not
in its character to join issues with
political parties.
The Chief Press Secretary to the
Chairman of the commission, Mr.
Kayode Idowu, said this when
contacted to react to the allegation.
Idowu said, “INEC doesn’t join
issues with political parties,
because the commission is a
dispassionate umpire.”
However, the National Publicity
Secretary of the APC, Alhaji Lai
Mohammed, dismissed the
allegation as utter nonsense and
irritable.
Speaking in a telephone interview
with one of our correspondents on
Wednesday, Mohammed said, “I’m
in Abuja with some of our leaders.
Baba Bisi Akande is here, Alhaji
Atiku Abubakar is here, former
Governor Kayode Fayemi is here.
Asiwaju Bola Tinubu is in Lagos.
“No leader of the APC is outside the
country. So, tell me who is Jega
meeting? Is it members of our NEC?
Not one of our leaders is outside
the country. This people are
paranoid. We are preparing for our
NEC meeting. We have some of our
governors here. The PDP is
paranoid.”
But Fani-Kayode also alleged that
the meeting was aimed at making
sure that those who had yet to get
the Permanent Voter Cards were
denied the opportunity of receiving
them.
The former Minister of Aviation
put the number of those voters at
23 million.
Fani-Kayode added that the
commission was scheming out
voters in states and areas where he
said supporters of the ruling party
were.
Besides, he alleged that the PVCs
were still at China and had yet to
be imported to Nigeria.
He said, “Pieces of information at
our disposal have shown that Jega
has had meetings with the APC
stalwarts in Dubai and other cities
in the world to perfect this wanton
conspiracy against 23 million
eligible voters.
“Besides, we have information that
the PVCs that Nigerians are
scrambling for are not in Nigeria
and will not arrive before the
elections.
“These PVCs are still in China and
Jega has strategically delayed their
arrival to suit his electioneering
permutations.”
Asked to provide proof about the
alleged Dubai meeting, Fani-Kayode
refused.
Fani-Kayode however said that Jega
must also show Nigerians proof that
the Chinese company printing the
PVCs had been paid in full by
disclosing the total contract sum
and the amount paid to date.
He also demanded that Jega should
show proof of arrival or expected
date of arrival of all PVCs for the
elections and that he should equally
tell Nigerians how he could have
distributed 23 million PVCs within
five days to election if there hadn’t
been postponement.
He said it was wrong for the
commission to have claimed that
the election was shifted due to
insecurity, adding that the electoral
body was not fully ready for the
election.
“The matter is that INEC has failed
in its responsibility to produce and
distribute PVCs to about 34 per cent
of registered voters who would
require the cards to vote in the
elections.
“This brings us to the issue of
statistics of PVC distribution and
collection which we believe Jega, as
a person acting in concert with
some forces of retrogression, is
playing games with.
“We express our concerns today
that Jega may have decided to aid
the APC to rig the forthcoming
elections through the manipulation
of the production, distribution and
collection of PVCs, such that
emerging trends have consistently
shown calculated attempts to
deprive parts of the country that
would traditionally vote for
President Jonathan of their PVCs.”

Must Read:- Things To Do On Valentine’s Day If You Are Single

V-DAY is not just a day to glorify
romance, it is also a day to
celebrate love in general, love for
yourself, your friends, your
community and for the world.
So if
you don’t have a date this
Valentine’s Day, don’t stay at home
and pout. Here are some other
things you can do on February 14th
to celebrate the day of love.
1. Cook Yourself a Nice Meal . After
spending hours at a voting center,
putting together a nice meal for
yourself is the next thing to do. It’s
practically impossible not to feel
good afterward.
2. Head To a Club. There are nice
clubs out there that you can go to.
Most of them are best decorated on
February and their service is
always at its best. Go there and
enjoy your life.
3. Get yourself together. It may
sound strange, but when was the
last time you woke up feeling
totally put together? Instead of
moping about being single, use the
free time you have on Valentine’s
Day evening to get yourself
organized. Clean up your calendar,
catch up on laundry, plan ahead
for major things, and get a head
start on those works you’ve been
avoiding. Use the day to finish (or
start) something you’ve been
meaning to tackle. It may sound
lame at first, but you might be
surprised at how good you feel
after you’re done.
4. Send Love Someone Else’s Way .
Studies show that kindness spreads
like epidemic, so start the epidemic.
Do something nice for another
person. Open a door for someone
who needs it, visit an elderly
person, spend time with him/her,
help them arrange the house. buy a
rose and give it to someone random
on the street, whatever you do, will
make you feel full of love inside.
5. Throw a Party. If you have the
money then invite your friends
over to celebrate being fabulous.
6. Love Your Singleness. Think about
all the marvelous benefits of being
single, from not fighting over
minor issues to being able to keep
your living space as clean or as
messy as you’d like. No unnecessary
question like where are you, where
have you be…

Prison Inmate Bags Second Class Upper Degree from National Open University of Nigeria

A prison inmate, Theophilus Adeniyi,
has received a second class upper
degree in Peace studies and
Conflict Resolution from the
National Open University of Nigeria
(NOUN) .

Adeniyi, an inmate awaiting trial,
is a pioneer student of NOUN at its
Enugu Prison study centre. He was
on Tuesday presented the
certificate by the Controller-
General of the Nigerian Prisons
Service (NPS), Peter Ekpendu, at the
first convocation of the centre.
Ekpendu commended Adeniyi for
making the NPS proud and
promised to continue to encourage
inmates to reach their potentials in
whatever trade they chose.
He said the intensity of academic
activities the inmates were engaged
in was a clear testimony that the
future of the country was bright.
Ekpendu said that the healthy
condition of the inmates was an
indication that the authorities were
actualizing their mandate, which
was to keep prisoners safe, sound
and in good condition.
In a citation, the Deputy Controller
of Prisons, Enugu State Command,
Felix Lawrence , said that the
graduand made a Cumulative
Grade Point Average of 4.36.
Lawrence said that Adeniyi was a
final year political science student
at Enugu State University of
Science and Technology (ESUT)
when he was arrested and charged
to court over a communal crisis.
The Coordinator of the study
centre, Ladan Babankodong, extolled
Adeniyi’s virtues, saying that he
was a shining example.
In a remark, the graduate said that
he was elated to have completed his
university education in spite of
obvious challenges.
“I promise that I shall at all times
uphold the legacies of NOUN and
also be a good ambassador.
Just few months to my final
degree examination in ESUT, I
was set up and roped into the
matter that I am currently facing
trial for, but today I thank God I
am a graduate,” Adeniyi said.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN)
reports that Adeniyi, who was one
of the 54 students in the centre,
bagged three awards from NOUN,
including a N50,000 cash award as
the best student.
